The name Niflheim

The NIFLHEIM cluster supercomputer was given a name through a naming competition held at the CAMP center in the summer of 2002.

.. _Niflheim: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niflheim
.. _Muspelheim: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muspelheim

In `Nordic mythology <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology>`_
Niflheim_ is the land of fog and ice, and Niflheim_ is part of the `myth of creation <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology#The_beginning>`_:
When the heat from Muspelheim_ melted the first drops of water from the ice of Niflheim_, these drops formed into the giant Ymer, the first living creature.
When Ymer was later killed, his dead body was molded into the world as we know it.

(see the `Gylfaginning section 4 <http://www.cybersamurai.net/Mythology/nordic_gods/LegendsSagas/Edda/ProseEdda/GylfaginningI-X.htm#gylf4>`_:
*Frá Niflheimi ok Múspelli*).

(check out Chapter 4, The Creation Of The World).

The NIFLHEIM cluster supercomputer is actually housed in a basement room with chilled air cooling,
and NIFLHEIM is thus bitterly cold.
This room is officially known as the *Fog Room* (in Danish: *Tågerummet*) because it was originally built with the purpose of
experiments in the mid-1960'ies by Prof. R. E. H. Rasmussen trying to precipitate fog using electrical fields.

Niflheim Linux v.6 supercomputer cluster

This Wiki contains Getting_Started information and various technical information about Niflheim version 6.

For the previous Niflheim version see https://wiki.fysik.dtu.dk/niflheim.

The Niflheim Linux cluster supercomputer is installed at the Catalysis for Sustainable Energy (CASE) center at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Niflheim's present compute resources consist of xxx CPU cores with a total peak performance above xx TeraFLOPS. Please see the Hardware page for further details.

In 2009 a new computer room for Niflheim was constructed at DTU for housing the expansion of the system. A unique computer room design was implemented together with the consulting company Alectia such that the room consists of completely separated cold aisles and hot aisles, thereby eliminating inefficiencies due to the mixing of cold and hot air. Together with the centralized DTU cooling service providing chilled water, this is a highly optimized cooling technology. Also, the new series of Intel Xeon 5500 series CPUs are significantly more energy efficient than previous CPU technologies, leading to an overall extremely energy efficient computer installation.

Please consult the Getting_Started page for information about how to use the Niflheim system.

For Niflheim usage statistics please see the DCSC usage graphs. You may also read about the Niflheim_name.
